Intermeshing Spur Gear Train & Mechanical Transmission Puzzle
Gear Ratios, Direction Reversal & Mechanical Advantage on a Pegboard
What You Need Before Starting
Assembly & Setup Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step in sequence. Encourage your child to participate in measuring, cutting, calibrating, and testing each mechanical and sensorial feature.
Trace & Cut Involute Spur Gear Discs
Use compass templates to draw 8-tooth (small), 16-tooth (medium), and 24-tooth (large) gears with matching 1cm tooth pitch. Cut out carefully with scissors.
Pierce Center Axle Holes with Precision
Pierce an exact center hole in each gear disc. Glue a small cardboard spacer washer behind each gear so teeth do not drag against the baseboard.
Construct the Modular Axle Pegboard Base
Pierce a grid of axle holes spaced 2cm apart across your baseboard so children can reposition gear axles anywhere to build custom gear trains.
Attach the Driver Crank Handle & Indicator Flags
Glue a small crank handle onto one gear (Driver), and glue colorful arrow flags onto the other gears to visually track rotational speed and direction.
Mesh Gears & Solve Transmission Challenges
Position the gears on the pegboard so their teeth interlock smoothly. Turn the crank handle to transmit power down a 5-gear kinetic chain!
Gear Ratios, Torque & Directional Inversion
When two spur gears mesh, the driven gear turns in the opposite direction of the driver. A large gear driving a small gear increases output rotation speed (speed multiplier), while a small gear driving a large gear multiplies output torque.
The gear ratio (driven teeth divided by driver teeth) mathematically defines both the speed multiplier and rotational torque trade-off.
Cognitive Milestones & Skills Developed
Mechanical Logic & Causality
Tracing rotational direction chains (Clockwise -> Counter-Clockwise -> Clockwise).
Mathematical Ratios & Fractions
Calculating how many turns an 8-tooth gear makes for every 1 turn of a 24-tooth gear (3:1 ratio).
Iterative Pitch Calibration
Spacing teeth evenly so gear teeth mesh smoothly without jamming or slipping.
Fun Family Explorations & Logic Games
The Direction-Matching Puzzle
Set up a gear train starting at Gear A (turning clockwise) and position idler gears so that output Gear E also turns clockwise.
The 3x Speed Multiplier Challenge
Build a gear transmission using small and large gears so that 1 turn of your hand crank produces 3 complete turns of the output pinwheel.
Parent & Educator Note:
Gears make abstract physics visible and touchable. Children love discovering how turning one wheel can power an entire kinetic machine.
