Assembly Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step carefully. Work together to clean waste, score precise cuts, align pivots, and test kinetic mechanics.
Stretch the Wide Resonator Band
Stretch the wide rubber band lengthwise around one popsicle stick so it runs flat down the center of both the front and back faces.
Cut & Position the Straw Spacers
Cut two 2cm pieces of drinking straw. Place one straw piece underneath the rubber band near the left end, and place the second straw piece on top of the rubber band near the right end.
Sandwich with the Second Stick
Place the second popsicle stick on top of the straws, sandwiching the vibrating rubber band inside the gap.
Secure Both Ends with Small Rubber Bands
Tightly wrap small rubber bands around both outer ends of the stick sandwich beyond the straw spacers to clamp the structure firmly together.
Hum (Don’t Blow) & Buzz Away
Place your lips over the center gap between the sticks and hum a tune with your vocal cords ("Doo-Doo-Doo"). The rubber band will vibrate wildly with a loud, buzzy kazoo roar!
Sympathetic Resonance & Mirliton Acoustics
Vocal vibrations humming through the gap cause the stretched rubber band or parchment membrane to oscillate rapidly against the airflow, creating rich buzzing harmonic overtones.
The tension of the rubber band and the spacing between straws determines the resonant pitch and timbre.
